This is a rare rod in superb condition, sympathetically restored by
ourselves, complete with its original whole cane butt and split cane middle
& tip, blued brass handle fittings, nickel silver ferrules with their
rosewood stoppers, cloth bag and aluminium tube. This is the very best
№1 grade of the more powerful of the two Wallis rods made by Hardy Bros
pre-WWII.
It is very unusual to come across this model, and even more so to find one
in sound, usable condition with all of its original major parts (including
the tube) present.
We are delighted to offer this rod to the connoisseur of vintage tackle who
wants a fine example fit for regular use. Price: £750
The rod has a progressive all through action suitable for reel lines from 3
- 5 lbs breaking strain. Although F.W.K. Wallis recommended it for all
sorts of large fish including record sized barbel, we suggest that it is
best suited to float fishing and touch ledgering for chub, tench, crucian
carp, perch, roach and grayling.
The whole cane butt, Palakona split cane middle and tip are all sound and
straight. The ferrules are the factory numbered nickel silver suction
type, tight on the cane and very firm fitting. We’ve re-blued and
lacquered them and they have their original rosewood stoppers. The
original brass butt cap, sliding reel bands and conical shoulder collar have
all been re-blued and lacquered.
We took the opportunity to re-cork the handle with Flor grade hand-cut corks
to a length of 22” instead of the original 18”, which most people find
uncomfortably short. The handle is turned to the exact shape and diameter as
the original. The intermediate rings are bronzed, graduated stand off high
bells, and the butt and tip rings are correctly silver finished with clear
agatine centres. These are vintage but unused rings from our extensive
stock. All ferrule, ring and intermediate whippings are translucent
varnish-impregnated vintage green silk.
The cloth bag is sound, as is the aluminium tube with its push fit aluminium
cap. Both bag and tube are the rod’s originals made and supplied by
Hardy Bros. By request, pictures of the rod and a scan of the relevant
page in the 1937 Hardy Bottom Fishers’ catalogue will be sent by email (
edward@barder-rod.co.uk).
