We made a pair of these 12′ Avons for two brothers. They were ordered on the 7th of March 2007 and completed on the 5th of February 2008. I’m amazed that they were ready so quickly. It’s less than twenty years ago and our lead time even then was over two years.
I’m assured by its original owner that this rod has not been used at all. It’s in mint condition throughout. We have made only a handful of twelve footers and they’re extremely scarce. I think I may have had one in stock before, but I’m not sure. What a rod for long trotting, laying or tench fishing! Twelve feet is the perfect length for a cane rod on still waters. You can reach over the rushes and reeds to steer that mid-morning six pounder out of trouble. A float-fished lob worm’s a good bet at this time of day, when the rolling fish and fizzing bubbles have petered out. There’ll still be the odd fish patrolling back and forth though, and I can assure you that when you swing out a big worm with this rod, it won’t be long before it’s bending deliciously down towards the sounding tench.
I expect you’d like me to tell you all about its particulars.
The blank is made from the finest seasoned Tonkin bamboo, flame tempered, hand-split, straightened and tapered to a tolerance of +/- .001″
The nickel sliver waterproof ferrules are our own make, blued and lacquered. They retain their hand-turned cork and poplar wood stoppers.
The 24″ handle is made from hand-cut Flor grade cork shives. The butt cap, reel bands and should collar are made by us from aluminium.
The rings are hard chrome plated stainless steel Sapphrite Laurels Europa -the best ever. The lined butt and tip rings are Amberfin. The hook keeper ring is secured by a hand-forged nickel sliver strap.
Whippings are Claret silk. The Indian ink inscription gives the rod’s length, model and date.
The rod has a flawless hand applied marine grade varnish finish and it comes in its tailor made partition bag.
Reel lines: 4 – 6 lbs.
Casting weights: up to ¾ of an ounce.
The rod has a crisp through action, it’s delightfully well balanced and pleasant to handle and by no means heavy.
Rare and impeccable, this is a rod you’d use and enjoy very much.
