Allcock Six Spoke Coxon Aerial  4”

This lovely reel is in excellent, sound working condition. Its Xylonite handles and solid brass line pins suggest that it was made in the mid-to-late 1920s. Production of this model ran from 1905 to 1928.

I like Coxon Aerials. I’ve got two in my tackle bag and I fish with them. Their lightweight ebonite spools run exceptionally well and pay out line smoothly to a trotting float.

Mechanically, this reel is A1. There is nothing out of order in any respect. It does have a good deal of patina, which I like, but you’d be hard pressed to find a more fishable example of this classic reel.

Condition report.

The walnut back retains its original age-patinated and softly worn French polish finish. It is true and sound.

The hand fettled sand cast star back is in original condition with attractive patina and the foot is straight and unaltered.

The spool’s ebonite flanges are in very good order with no cracks or dings.  The solid brass line pins are tight and straight. They do have a lot of tarnish and patina from old dressed silk lines but they are all sound. The Xylonite handles have typical crazing. They are straight and turn freely.

The spool spins truly and well with minimal play in the spindle/bush and the grub screw that controls end float turns freely. The nickel sliver spokes are clean (with some patina) and perfectly straight. The tension adjuster and spool release work perfectly.

The spool’s width between flanges is 1¹⁄₁₆“

The calliper check is crisp, strong and easily operated via its brass button (located upper left on the reel’s back).

This is another Coxon which one could fish with very happily. Properly maintained, it’ll be good for another hundred years.
