Ordered on the 29th of July 2000 and completed in March 2001, this rod has been fished with once on the river Test at Middleton and remains in mint as-new condition.
Specially commissioned with an up-locking mortised Olive wood and nickel silver reel seat, this is a very striking looking and smooth casting rod from a great vintage. Looking back through our 2000 order book, I can see we made many rods that I remember fondly and know are still giving good service.
We’ve tested this rod on the river Lambourn behind the workshop (you can too) and it proved to be extremely satisfying to cast. With the DT #5 line it is intended for, it casts with little or no fly line beyond the tip ring and continues to do so accurately and with smooth control and progressive power out to a measured forty five feet. Of course it will cast further, but beyond eighteen yards, one is getting to the limit of a #5-weight’s natural range.
The two piece configuration and up-locking nickel silver reel seat give this rod perfect natural balance. A lighter reel such as the ubiquitous LRH Lightweight or an Alnwick (Hardy) built Orvis CFO loaded with a DT #5 line would suit it best.
A perfect all-rounder for dry flies, nymphs and wet flies on small to medium rivers, this especially fine and unique rod is crying out to be used and enjoyed by a discerning angler.
