Bernard Vebables Aerial Reel № 7.

Made by Richard Carter of Traditional Angling c1997.

£2,400.00

Richard Carter made these sensational reels with the full endorsement and approval of the late Bernard Venables MBE. The intention was to make a limited edition of 100 reels. When Bernard died, Richard had made 43 of these reels and production ceased. This is not only a very, very finely made reel, it is rare and sought after.

It’s a 12 spoke 4″ diameter reel, a bit over three quarters of an inch wide between flanges (actually .862″). Its back plate and rims are hand polished aluminium with faux horn handles and a combination of brass and nickel silver components. It comes in a specially made green baize lined glass fronted wooden case, with a special certificate, signed by Bernard Venables and Richard Carter set into its back.

This example also comes with a lovely picture of Bernard Venables and Richard Carter, a set of five exceptionally rare goose quill floats made by Richard Carter and a hand stitched English bridle leather clam shell case.

The accompanying pictures and their captions will tell you all about this reel but you would be welcome to call me to discuss it.

Understandably, owners of these reels don’t part with them and they are hardly ever seen. This is only the third example of this model that we’ve listed. It is a fabulous, beautifully made and practical reel with unusual and impeccable provenance. For such a fine and rare piece with a direct link to Bernard Venables and one of the greatest centrepin makers of all time, it’s surely an essential reel for the connoisseur.
