We built this rod to the exact dimensions given by Richard Walker in his book Rod Building For Amateurs. We, professionals, have made a point of adhering to Walker’s tapers because the resulting rods are superb and Richard Walker’s design for this 10′ rod is peerless.
The vast majority if MK IV carp rods are not particularly close interpretations of Walker’s design. Our are!
Having examined, measured & photographed Richard Walker’s own MK IV when it was jointly owned by Chris Ball and Chris Yates, we have been able to build a number of these rods as facsimiles or, as here, with very similar aesthetic qualities to the original rod. In this case, by whipping it with ‘The Celebrated Elephant Rod Binding Silk’ shade 10 size 40, saturated in varnish, we achieved a colour very close to Walker’s original rod. The tippings are Pearsall’s Naples black silk.
We turned the handle with the same shaped top as the Walker rod and kept other details of whippings and fittings in the same style.
The rod has been very lightly used and perfectly looked after. It is absolutely straight and in close to 100% mint condition.
I have said before that there is no better rod for traditional carp fishing in smaller waters with baits such as floating crust. I have not changed my mind about this. For anyone wanting to fish under a tree canopy at close to medium range (up to about 40 yards) with reel lines of 8 – 12 lbs, this is THE rod.
It’s also useful for fishing with plugs, spinners and wobbled sprats etc for pike and it makes a super barbel rod. Even today’s monster chub are within its scope.
I expect that you’ve been hankering after just such a rod for a while now. Eureka! Your search is over.
