The Bernard Venables Aerial centrepin reel № 50.

Made by Richard Carter of Traditional Angling Products in 1997/98. Cased, in mint condition.

£2,650.00

Formerly the property of well known angler, broadcaster and writer Martin James.

This is ultra-rare Richard Carter Bernard Venables Aerial, number 50 of a limited edition (43 + 2 prototypes were actually made and production ceased when Bernard died) made in 1997/98. Richard Carter made this reel with Bernard’s collaboration and full approval. Its original owner, broadcaster and writer Martin James, specified his reel to have the number 50. This does NOT imply that there were more than 43 of these reels. There weren’t. Richard Carter kindly let me have a copy of his production figures so I know what I’m talking about for a change.

It’s a 12 spoke 4″ diameter reel, a bit over three quarters of an inch wide between flanges (actually .862″). It is un-anodised aluminium with faux ivory handles and a combination of brass and nickel silver components. It comes in a specially made green baize lined glass fronted wooden case, with a special certificate, signed by Bernard Venables and Richard Carter set into its back.

The accompanying pictures and their captions will tell you all about this reel but you would be welcome to call me to discuss it.

Understandably, owners of these reels don’t part with them and they are hardly ever seen. This is only the second of this model that we’ve listed. It is a fabulous, well made, good looking and practical reel with unusual and impeccable provenance. For such a fine and rare piece with a direct link to Bernard Venables and one of the greatest centrepin makers of all time, it represents very good value and a sound purchase in the long term.
