This exceptional 3-piece Avon rod was ordered on the 22nd of August 2002 and completed in 2003.
It is in mint, as-new condition.
In essence, this rod is a 3-piece version of our Chris Yates Merlin. The action is our quintessential Avon style -a fine but durable tip that bends seamlessly into the strong middle section, with power and just the right amount of spring in butt. When under maximum load (a six pound chub perhaps, or a hefty tench) the rod bends most through its middle, which is ferrule-free thanks to its 3-piece format.
The balance of the rod in the hand is super and it has an appealingly lively, crisp feel. Rated for reel lines of 3-6 lbs breaking strain, it’s a supremely versatile rod. It will be a pleasure to use for trotting fine tackle for roach, dace or grayling. Equally, it’ll handle tench, chub, perch and bream. One thinks of a rod of this sort as primarily a float rod, but you can touch ledger very effectively with it too. If you hook a decent barbel -any barbel is decent- you shouldn’t feel anxious. I used to use a rod very similar to this one for barbel fishing and once landed a fish of well over sixteen pounds with it. The rod was perfectly all right after this test and remains sound to this day.

Made from the very best Tonkin bamboo, flame tempered, hand split and straightened, the blank is precision built to our proprietary tapers. It is absolutely straight and after twenty two years resting quietly in its bag, it is fully mature!
The Flor grade cork handle is 26″ long with an onion shaped top. The butt cap, reel bands and shoulder collar are finely knurled nickel silver.
Ferrules are also nickel silver, blued, lacquered and fitted with hand turned hardwood and cork stoppers.
Rings are hard chrome plated stainless steel, with clear Amberfin butt and tip rings. There is a hook keeper ring above the handle, secured by a hand forged nickel silver strap.
Whippings, including the graduated intermediates, are varnish impregnated Pearsall’s silk.
The rod has a flawless hand-applied marine grade varnish finish and it comes in its tailor made bag.
